چکیده

This study expands on the current body of research examining technology-supported groups, individual creativity, and group diversity. By incorporating each of these elements into the experimental design, our objective was to determine how technology can best be leveraged to promote group creativity. We argue that diverse groups who are visually anonymous – i.e., they make use of the anonymity feature of collaborative technology and have not seen each other – will produce more creative results than homogeneous groups or groups who are diverse but not visually anonymous. A lab experiment was conducted using 80 student groups for whom anonymity was manipulated and diversity characteristics were captured. Conducting analysis for surfaceand deep-level diversity differences uncovered interesting patterns. First, our analysis of surface-level differences revealed our all-male groups produced more creativity ideas than mixed gender groups. Second, groups who demonstrated deep-level diversity were higher performing when visually anonymous. Taken together these findings suggest visual anonymity can potentially be beneficial to both homogeneous and diverse groups.

The role of diversity of life experiences in fostering collaborative creativity in demographically diverse student groups

Collaborative learning becomes a key instructional tool in a variety of educational settings, from primary to higher education. A Privacy Protection Model for Patient Data with Multiple Sensitive Attributes

The identity of patients must be protected when patient data are shared. The two most commonly used models to protect identity of patients are L-diversity and K-anonymity. However, existing work mainly considers data sets with a single sensitive attribute, while patient data often contain multiple sensitive attributes (e.g., diagnosis and treatment). This article shows that although the K-anony...

Gender and generosity: does degree of anonymity or group gender composition matter?

Employing a two-by-two factorial design that manipulates whether dictator groups are single or mixed-sex and whether procedures are single or double-blind, we examine gender effects in a standard dictator game. No gender effects were found in any of the experimental treatments for the mean or median levels of giving, or for the propensity to give nothing. However, females chose to give away hal...

Demographic Faultlines and Creativity in Diverse Groups

Despite the oft made argument that demographic diversity should enhance creativity, little is known about this relationship. We propose that group diversity, measured in terms of demographic faultlines, affects creativity through its effects on group members’ felt psychological safety to express their diverse ideas and the quality of information sharing that takes place across subgroup boundari...

Diversity in Groups

Diversity has the potential to either disrupt group functioning or, conversely, be the source of collective creativity and insight. These two divergent perspectives pose a paradox that has held the attention of scholars for many years. In response, researchers have marshaled evidence to specify the conditions under which diversity leads to more positive outcomes and explain why it does so under...
